Our Food Pantry is open to the public. It is located in our SSVdP Center at 410 South College, Tyler, Texas. Food is provided in the form of groceries and other items directly to the needy, ill, elderly, and children under the age of 18. All food is distributed in an equitable manner, on a first-come, first-served basis. Food is distributed without regard to race, color, creed, religion, disability, age, national origin, political beliefs, or sex of the people we serve. In addition, they are not required to attend a religious or political meeting, make a statement of faith, pledge membership to any religious or political organization, pay any fee, or agree to work in exchange for receiving food.
Food for distribution is purchased from the East Texas Food Bank, King’s Storehouse Food Bank, Brookshire’s Grocery Company, Mrs. Baird’s Bakery Outlet, Flowers Bakery and other sources. Canned goods are also obtained from food drives held by St. Gregory Cathedral School and Bishop T.K. Gorman Regional Catholic School. In addition, generous donors contribute various food and toiletry items to our food pantry.
One feature unique to our food pantry is that the people we serve are allowed to select food items of their choice from the different groups of food that we have, while interacting with the food pantry workers. Feedback from those we serve indicates this person-to-person process for selecting food items is preferred and provides dignity to the people we serve.
